📍 Favourite place: Medemblik

In our first year as liveaboards we travelled once all around the IJsselmeer and Markermeer. In September 2023 we visited the small town of Medemblik. We immediately liked it here a lot. So much so that we chose Medemblik as our winter berth. And also a little bit because our lovely Dutch neighbours did some very good marketing for it.

🧭 Where exactly?

⚓ Why we love this place

Medemblik is a small town, like there are many all around the IJsselmeer. Beautiful old houses around the centre, lots of restaurants and cafés and the nicely located town harbours make it one of the most popular excursion destinations in summer. But we mainly grew to love it in winter.

⛵ Who comes with their own boat

As always, it is a good idea to call or hail the harbour team and have them assign you a berth.

Pekelharinghafen (052° 46.285′ N 005° 06.793′ E)

  • easily accessible and large harbour right in the centre
  • sanitary building with toilets, showers and washing machines/dryers quite a walk away depending on your pontoon
  • relatively well sheltered from wind and swell

On top of that there are also Westerhaven and Oosterhaven directly in town, both of which are accessible for sailing boats. To get into Westerhaven the bridge needs to be opened. Guests staying for one night are usually moored in Oosterhaven.

🏝️ What you can do on land

  • A lovely little town with typical Dutch houses that is definitely worth a look.
  • Eating out: numerous restaurants in the centre.
  • Visit Kasteel Radboud.

💡 Extra tip

In summer you can take the historic steam railway from Medemblik for a trip to Hoorn. Definitely worth it for railway fans and families. Hoorn is also well worth a visit.
