The last miles of our Norway trip took us southwards in spring 2026. For our tour across the North Sea towards Shetland, we waited for good weather in Bulandet, Norway’s westernmost inhabited coastal community.
🧭 Where exactly?
- between Bergen and Florø
- Bulandet, Norway
⚓ Why we love this place
We’ve taken this little island to our hearts. Not least because we waited here so long for good weather that the locals started treating us almost like one of their own.

The beautiful archipelago consists of around 350 smaller and larger islands. The largest and highest is Alden at 460 m. They all belong to the municipality of Askvoll (Vestland).
There’s a lively community here. That’s probably the only way to keep remote places alive. For instance, they financed the really lovely indoor swimming pool with gym equipment and a bouldering wall, and volunteers keep everything in top shape.
⛵ For those arriving by their own boat

Nikøy Gjestebrygge (061° 17.120′ N 004° 37.987′ E)
- easily accessible, small guest jetty (likely fills up quickly in summer)
- sanitary facilities with toilets, showers, and washing machines/dryers
- fuel station
- despite appearances: relatively well protected from wind and swell
- Guest-Harbour on Noforeignland
🏝️ What to do ashore
- island tours on foot (there are some hiking trails), by bus, or with rented bikes (available at the Joker)
- an indoor swimming pool with gym for bad weather, about 18 € per day
- a small beach for (admittedly rare) warm summer weather
- a small café right by the Joker
💡 Our extra tip
The sheltered channels are also great for kayaking. You can rent some at Bulandsferie.
